Characteristics of Visual Impairments (textbook p.242):
1) Psychological (intellectual abilities are similar to sighted person, concept development depends on tactile experiences, unable to use sight to aid in the development of
integrated concepts, unable to use visual imagery)
2) Communicational (relatively unimpaired in language abilities)
3) Social/Emotional/Behavioural (may exhibit repetitive, stereotyped movements (eg. rubbing eyes, rocking), socially immature, withdrawn, dependent, unable to use non
verbal cues
4) Mobility (disadvantage in using spatial information, visual imagery and memory problems with functional implications)
5) Academic (generally behind sighted peers)
Symptoms of Visual Impairments (text p.243): 1)Behaviour (rubs eyes excessively, shuts or covers one eye, tilts head, or thrusts head forward, has difficulty in reading or other work requiring close use of the eyes, blinks more than usual or is irritable when doing close work, holds books close to eyes, is unable to see distant things clearly, squints eyelids together or frowns) 2)Appearance (crossed eyes, red-rimmed, encrusted, or swollen eyelids, inflamed or watery eyes, recurring sties) 3)Complaints (eyes that itch, burn, or feel scratchy, cannot see well, dizziness, headaches, or nausea following close eye work, blurred or double vision)
